ROCKFORD, IL – The city of Rockford experienced a tragic event this Sunday afternoon when a K9 officer of the Rockford Police Department was shot and killed in the line of duty.
The incident occurred while officers were responding to a domestic situation that began on Jacqueline Drive and escalated in the 2900 block of 11th street. A suspect, involved in the incident, opened gunfire upon Rockford Police and struck the K9 Officer. It is with great sadness that we report the K9 officer did not survive this encounter. The suspect was also injured, sustaining a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and is currently receiving treatment.
Cabello said, “I’m beyond saddened to hear about the brave K9 officer from Rockford PD who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. This incident is yet another reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers and their K9 partners face daily to keep our community safe. During this difficult time, I urge our community to come together in support of all our law enforcement who continue to face danger in the name of public safety.”
The Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force is now conducting an investigation into this officer-involved shooting.
