ILLINOIS – State Representative John M. Cabello (R – Machesney Park) is celebrating the verdict on the high-profile federal court case against former longtime Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan. Today, a jury found Madigan used his public office for personal gain and found him guilty of conspiracy, bribery and wire fraud charges.
“Madigan’s guilty verdict is proof that Illinois has long been a hotspot of government corruption and crooked politicians, ” said Cabello. “While this guilty verdict is celebrated and provides proof that Illinois has a broken system of government, corruption remains rampant throughout Illinois’ public bodies. Lawmakers, especially those in the Rockford area who still maintain connections to Michael Madigan, should use this result to pass legitimate ethics reform and prioritize rebuilding public trust in our institutions.”
Madigan was found guilty on 10 counts and not guilty on seven counts. The jury was deadlocked on six counts.
Former Speaker of the House Michael J. Madigan was a delegate to the 1969-70 Illinois Constitutional Convention and played a pivotal role in drafting the current Illinois Constitution. He served as Speaker of the Illinois House from 1983 to 1995 and then again from 1997 to 2021, totaling an unprecedented 36 years.
