SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative John M. Cabello (R-Machesney Park) has introduced legislation (HB1846) to extend the property tax appeal window from 30 days to 60 days, giving homeowners and businesses more time to challenge unfair tax assessments and escape the burden from oppressive Illinois property taxes.
“Illinois property taxes are out of control, and hardworking people are being forced out of their homes and businesses,” said Rep. Cabello. “My bill gives taxpayers a fighting chance to challenge unfair assessments instead of getting steamrolled by an unfair and broken system.”
Under current law, property owners have just 30 days to appeal their tax assessments—a short window that many find impossible to navigate. Cabello’s bill ensures that families and businesses have enough time to gather the necessary information and fight back against excessive taxes by doubling the appeal period to 60 days.
“Property taxes in Illinois are already some of the highest in the country,” Cabello continued. “As a lawmaker, it is my responsibility to find ways we can give people more time to push back against bad assessments instead of forcing them to pay more than their fair share.”
The legislation is now under consideration in the 104th General Assembly.
