Rep. Cabello Files Bill to Lower Legal Drinking Age to 18

SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative John M. Cabello (R-Machesney Park) has reintroduced legislation (HB1019) to allow 18-year-olds to legally consume alcohol in Illinois when accompanied by a parent or guardian. The proposal would bring Illinois in line with Wisconsin’s law and in turn support small pubs and restaurants.

“If you’re old enough to vote, serve in the military, and pay taxes, you should be trusted to have a drink with your parents,” said Rep. Cabello. “This bill respects personal responsibility, strengthens families, and helps small restaurants and pubs thrive.”

Under current Illinois law, individuals must be 21 to consume alcohol under any circumstance. Meanwhile, neighboring Wisconsin allows 18-year-olds to drink in bars and restaurants when accompanied by a parent or guardian—a policy that has successfully supported small businesses without increasing alcohol-related issues.

“This is about freedom, fairness, and supporting local businesses,” Cabello continued. “Wisconsin’s law works just fine, and Illinois should follow suit. Northwest Illinois is losing business to our northern neighbors, and it’s time we give our small restaurants and pubs the same opportunities.”

The legislation is now under consideration in the 104th General Assembly.
