Rep. Cabello Files Bill to Require Body Cameras for Public Officials

SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative John M. Cabello (R-Machesney Park) has introduced legislation (HB1039) to require public officials to wear body cameras. The legislation is an attempt to increase transparency, prevent corruption, and protect taxpayers from backroom deals and bribery.

“For too long, Illinois politicians have played by their own rules while taxpayers foot the bill,” said Rep. Cabello. “If police officers are required to wear body cameras, why shouldn’t the politicians handling billions of taxpayer dollars be held to the same standard?”

Illinois has a long history of political corruption, with elected officials abusing their positions for personal gain. Cabello’s bill would ensure that public officials are held accountable for their actions, preventing secret deals and unethical behavior that cost taxpayers millions.

“This isn’t complicated and holds politicians to the same standards we hold law enforcement to —if you’re doing your job honestly, you should have nothing to hide,” Cabello continued. “It’s time to put an end to Illinois’ shady politics and make government work for the people again.”

The legislation is now under consideration in the 104th General Assembly.
