State Rep. John M. Cabello Files Bill to Repeal Illinois’ TRUST Act (Sanctuary State Law)

SPRINGFIELD – State Representative John M. Cabello (R-Machesney Park) has introduced legislation (HB1029) to repeal the TRUST Act, ending Illinois’ sanctuary state status and allowing law enforcement to work directly with federal immigration officials. The bill ensures that local police can detain and cooperate in the deportation of illegal immigrants who violate the law, costing taxpayers billions and protecting communities.

“We cannot continue to allow Illinois to be a safe haven for illegal immigrants while law-abiding taxpayers foot the bill,” said Rep. Cabello. “Democrats have handcuffed law enforcement and put our communities at risk. My bill restores common sense—if you break the law and you’re here illegally, you will be subject to federal deportation efforts.”

The TRUST Act, passed in a prior administration, prohibits local law enforcement from working with federal immigration authorities. This policy is responsible for dangerous criminals avoiding deportation, costing taxpayers billions in social services, and making communities less safe. Rep. Cabello’s bill would reverse this reckless policy and put the safety of Illinois residents first.

“This is about restoring law and order, plain and simple,” Cabello continued. “Legal immigration is welcome—lawlessness is not. If you break our laws, you shouldn’t be protected. Illinois families deserve better.”

The bill is now under consideration in the 104th General Assembly.
