Rep. John M. Cabello Stands with Parents Against Government Overreach

SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative John M. Cabello (R-Machesney Park) is standing with families across Illinois in opposition to HB2827, the so-called “Homeschool Act.” The bill, which passed out of committee today despite overwhelming public opposition, would place burdensome state mandates on families who choose to homeschool or send their children to private schools.

“This is another prime example of government overreach,” said Rep. Cabello. “Parents know what is best for their children—not politicians in Springfield. Homeschool is a way for families to access quality education and they shouldn’t be punished for choosing the best option for their kids.”

HB2827 would require nonpublic elementary and secondary schools to register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education. It would also force homeschooling families to submit a Homeschool Declaration Form or face fines and even possible imprisonment. Additionally, the bill mandates that administrators submit personal information about themselves and their students to state and local authorities.

The opposition to HB 2827 has been overwhelming. More than 34,000 Illinoisans filed witness slips against the bill, and thousands traveled to the State Capitol to voice their concerns and stand up for parental rights.

“Springfield politicians continue to push policies that strip parents of their rights,” Cabello continued. “This bill doesn’t protect children—it simply expands government control where it’s neither needed nor wanted. I will continue to fight to stop this attack on our freedoms.”

Despite every House Republican on the Education Policy Committee voting against the measure, it passed out of committee and will now head to the House Floor for further consideration. Rep. Cabello urges residents who oppose HB 2827 to take action by signing House Republicans’ petition or filing a witness slip at ilga.gov.
