Machesney Park, IL – State Rep. John M. Cabello is working to ensure lawmakers reject soft-on-crime policies and spend time working to decrease crime in our communities.
Fighting Chicago’s Soft-on-Crime Policies
Rep. Cabello is leading the way against Chicago’s soft-on-crime policies. The SAFE-T Act (1) and efforts to decriminalize drugs (2) , have left our communities less secure, but Rep. Cabello knows that to keep families together, we must have safer neighborhoods.
Supporting Law Enforcement and First Responders
Because we need to restore a culture of respect for law enforcement and first responders, John sponsored legislation to ensure they are protected during times of using justified force through the Stand Your Ground Act (3), to ensure rules are established for the use of body camera, recordings (4), and to ensure stiffer guidelines are in place to deny pretrial release for criminals (5).
Combating the Fentanyl Epidemic
Fentanyl and other opioids are pouring across the southern border. In 2021, there were 3,031 deaths due to opioid overdoses in Illinois, up more than 38% from 2019 (6). John has supported legislation to discourage devastating drug abuse, prevent overdoses, and keep our communities safe from the flow of illegal drugs (7). He also backed legislation to raise criminal penalties for fentanyl trafficking (8).
