Rep. Cabello statement on National Police Week

Assistant Minority Leader and State Representative John M. Cabello issued the following statement on National Police Week being observed nationwide May 10 – 16, 2026 to honor the dedication, bravery, and unwavering commitment of the men and women who wear the badge:

“National Police Week is an important reminder of the daily sacrifices made by our law enforcement officers here in Northern Illinois and across the country. Every police officer begins their day with the fact that they might be called upon to face danger, to protect a life, or to keep the peace. Their uniform is not just a piece of clothing; it is a symbol of courage, service, and public trust. These individuals are our neighbors, friends, and family members and have chosen a profession that puts others’ safety above their own. For that, they deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. It takes a certain kind of person to wear the badge. The job is a 24/7 responsibility. Officers do not get to stop protecting us on holidays, weekends or during the middle of the night. They are always there ready for the call.

The reason why I wanted to get into law enforcement is the opportunity to help people who often cannot help themselves. We get to help the elderly, children, the disabled, and especially and unfortunately the victims of crime. When you see a neighbor in your community on their worst day because they are either a victim of crime or in need of urgent assistance, it is rewarding being able to show up and bring calm to the chaos.”
