Rep. Cabello’s Monthly Update

We are rapidly approaching the end of the 2023 Spring Legislative Session. As expected, the Democrat Majority is blocking essentially all of our proposals to enhance public safety, increase government transparency, practice fiscal responsibility.

Nevertheless, I show up every day to fight for the principles important to the people of Winnebago, Stephenson, and Boone counties.

Please enjoy this recap of my April serving you as your State Representative.

Any questions can be directed to my district office at 815-974-0090.

Press Tour

Police Officer Recruitment and Retention

Assistant Minority Leader and State Representative John M. Cabello joined fellow Republican state representatives Patrick Windhorst (R – Metropolis), Dan Ugaste (R – Geneva), and Dennis Tipsword (R – Metamora) in a press conference where their Truth In Public Safety working group presented their agenda that aims to improve public safety in Illinois.

The Truth in Public Safety working group has proposed a series of legislative initiatives designed to attract top-notch law enforcement professionals and support current officers. The proposals include:

HB 4047: Recognizes out-of-state training to help officers from other states find employment within Illinois departments.

HB 4046: Protects law enforcement from anonymous complaints and ensures they receive their due process rights.

HB 4048: Offers student loan repayment options as a financial incentive to attract the next generation of police officers, particularly in communities most in need.

HB 3217: Establishes the Back the Badge program, which allows law enforcement agencies to develop and prioritize specific recruitment plans based on their unique needs and community desires.

Rep. Cabello emphasized the appeal of these initiatives, stating, “The adoption of these proposals will make it clear – we support our law enforcement, with both our words and actions. They serve as a way to address the concerns of police departments across Illinois and help them begin to attract the kind of honest and respectable law enforcement professionals that not only our friends on the other side of the aisle claim to support, but the kind of professionals that our communities deserve.”

Com Ed Four Ethics Statement

In response to the return of the guilty verdict in the ‘ComEd Four’ trial, Rep. Cabello released the following statement:

“This is a perfect example of why one-party rule is a bad thing. Madigan’s culture of corruption built a system that permits personal gain over public service. His system still exists today as Democrats have shown zero desire to use their super-majority to pass meaningful ethics reform. I remain totally committed to using my office to stand against any form of corruption at every level of government.”

Fiscal Responsibility

State Rep. John Cabello joined fellow Republican Leaders Norine Hammond and Ryan Spain, and Assistant Republican Leader C.D. Davidsmeyer in a press conference on April 24th where they called for a moratorium on the expansion of Illinois’ billion-dollar health benefits program for undocumented immigrants.

In light of a recent report from the Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) detailing the massive cost and enrollment expansions of Illinois’ health benefits program for undocumented immigrants, Rep. Cabello is urging his colleagues in the General Assembly to exercise fiscal responsibility in both the short-term and long-term to ensure that the state budget remains sustainable.

“Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for any federal Medicaid match, resulting in State General Revenue Funds being used to pay for the entirety of services provided. As pointed out in our press conference, the dramatic growth in undocumented immigrant participation will require nearly a billion dollars in general revenue funds to support the program in Fiscal Year 2024. This is unsustainable and could lead to the loss of funding and services for Illinois’ most vulnerable citizens,” said Rep. Cabello.

Events

Law Enforcement Memorial Day

Rep. Cabello led a floor speech yesterday about fallen law enforcement officers in recognition of Police Officer Memorial Day.

The men and women who have the courage, dedication, and honor to wear that badge don’t want to do anything except protect and serve. It’s a calling, a lifestyle, not just something you decide to do. It’s something that burns inside of you, driving you to help your fellow citizens, to be there when they need you most, and to handle rapidly evolving situations perfectly.

These brave men and women do everything they can, day in and day out, to do their job right, with honor, integrity, and guts. Most importantly, they do it to protect you. There is no more noble job than being able to protect one’s citizens, and there are no more committed people to do this job than our police.
